2016 Grand Vintage ‘Marie Christien Lugten’
The source of endless pleasure
The house of Sittella has been making wine in the Swan Valley for 25+ years. They offer high quality fortified, white and red wines. They also offer a range of distinct sparkling wines, all made by the time-consuming French traditional method. The house of Sittella has become one of Australia’s, and Western Australia best sparkling wine producers.
2016 Grand Vintage ‘Marie Christien Lugten’; one of the finest sparkling bottles from this house. Complex with fresh ripe fruit characters. Grapes sourced from Pemberton, a cool climate region in Western Australia. A blend of 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay grapes, all hand-picked fruit, a long cool fermentation, and 60 months of aging on lees is a recipe for yummyness.
My tasting notes:
It’s expressive, bubbles are endless and refined. Golden apple notes and citrus pith aromas shine through a solid bouquet of yeast, brioche as well as faint hints of strawberry and red cherry. The wine is fresh and fruity but has all the aromas you would expect from aged sparkling wine alongside some flint, spice and brioche no doubt from the 5 year influence of lees contact. It maintains a sharp acidity on the palate and significant length. Released ready to drink now but if you prefer it more soften and mellow, holding on to it for five years more will do the trick.
Pairing:
This bubbly is outstanding on its own and also shines when served with canapés, pâté, crudités, oysters, fresh cheese and salty fried finger foods. Have a little salt with this bubbly. A snack favourite of mine is buttered popcorn. Surprised? Give it a try; it will wow your palate.
On the table, has the acidity to complement and contrast every course, from starters to dessert. It plays a supporting role, without stealing the spotlight, unless, of course, you want it to play the leading role.
Butter-seared seafood, pot roasts, roasted poultry or red meat, a sip cleanses the palate after every bite, making it an excellent companion at the table. It’s also a refreshing way to extend the evening into the small hours!
